What is a VW Camper Van?
The VW Camper Van is also known as the Volkswagen Type 1
Transporter, or bus. This van was created in the 1950’s based
on the original Volkswagen model.
The man who created the Volkswagen Type 2 Bus was Ben Pon,
who sketched out an idea of the van which was followed through
some time later. The bus was the first ever forward control van
“the driver sits above the wheel.”
How many versions of the VW Camper Van exist now?
So far there is the T1, T2, T2c, T3, T3 syncro, T4, and
T5.
• T1 – The T1 is the original VW Camper Van make, knick
named the Micro-bus. There are currently 3 different existing
models of the original T1, Ironically named T1a, T1b, and T1c.
The difference between the three being the T1a has a larger
engine door, 15 inch wheels. The T1b is the model with the 16
inch wheels. The T1c is the model with the wider rear door.
• T2 – The T2 looks a lot like the T1 but it has a split
front windshield, bigger than the T1’s body itself, and also
slightly heavier.
• T2c - Alike to the T2 but with a raised roof and
air-cooled engines.
• T3 – Also known as the T25 in Britain and Ireland. Totally
different mechanical design then the T2 but also a similar
size, but being 12 cm wider, and much heavier. The rear door
was enlarged on the T3 along with the front end being lowered
down to free up space in the interior. And eventually after
some time the engine in the T3 was changed to the water cooled
diesel engine.
• T3 syncro – A model of the T3 with 4 wheel drive.
• T4 Front engine and water cooled.
• T5 much like the T4 but carries an aerodynamic style and a
large dashboard with small hood.
Interesting facts about the VW Camper Van.
The VW bus was highly popular in the 70’s era, and also
featured in many movies covered in “groovy” paintings and
styles. The VW Camper Van was so popular back in the 70’s
because it was one of the first vehicles to provide room to
transport many different people at one time with lots of space
between seats and passengers.
The VW bus was originally known as the Bug, Microbus,
splittie, Hippy bus, or bully.

classifieds could carry VW Camper Vans, depending on how lucky
