Used Handicap Van
At least the average person will buy used handicap vans that are called ‘mini vans’ due to the ease of the
driving aspect. They are smaller than a full sized van and they just handle better. They have better fuel
efficiency and have that compact look. But some people still want the full sized used handicap van especially if
they are carrying more than one wheelchair or just more space is needed.
Today you can buy a used handicap van with all the conversions one could imagine. Your best bet is to find a
reputable mobility dealership. They will have specialist that will tell you what needs to be installed, depending
on the severity of the handicapped person. If not decided on what is really needed in the used handicap van, again
talk to someone that knows the ins and outs of them. Then talk to the person that will be using or driving the used
handicap van. They will tell you what they want and do not want.
Some of the large van manufactures such as GM have a program that will help with financial assistance for
drivers that are eligible; this also includes the handicapped passenger. There are others as well, such as Ford and
Dodge. Check around and see what there is available. Adaptive equipment on a used handicap van might include the
steering system, one that has the gears on the steering wheel, the vehicle entry, brakes, seats; driver positions
and accelerator systems.
Some used handicap van dealers will offer certain packages and are located all over the United States. Most
large cities have them and they are there to help you equip the used handicap van to your specifications. They
might even offer service and maintenance deals. Be wary, not all used handicap van dealers are the same. Try not to
use the internet when buying a used handicap van as some will try and gouge you. Although there are a lot of
dealerships that will do the same, it is a bit safer than online. Check out Ford and GM mobility services that are
online and Braun and VMI as well. This will at least get you started on what you are looking for.
When looking to buy used handicap vans, look locally first. This way you can actually see the van and what it
has and does not have. You will be able to access the history of the van and what has been done on it through the
years. Find a mobility dealership that is open twenty four hours a day, seven days a week. The electrical system
does go out and no one wants to be stranded in the middle of the night, especially the handicapped.
Used handicap vans come in so many different styles, shapes and sizes; certainly there is one out there for you
or someone you care about. Remember they have needs that are a little different than the average person and will
need special accessories on their new used handicapped van.
