Luxury Conversion Vans
The conversion van is a full sized van, usually called a cargo van and is sent to a third party to be outfitted
with all the luxuries that the customer wants. Conversion vans became quite popular in the nineteen seventies and
eighties. Those were just vans with more seats and many had murals painted on the sides. Or no seats at all, say
used by a lot rock bands, going from gig to gig. Many had them for camping and road trips. If a boy came up driving
and conversion van to pick up your daughter, she more than likely would not be allowed to go with him. ‘Bad boy’
images were the norm back then. Today not so much.
Luxury conversion vans became very popular in the late nineteen eighties; these were great for small families or
a couple to go camping. The government and vehicles manufactures started efforts to make these luxury conversion
vans safe. Once these luxury conversion vans became popular, so the prices went up. Because so many people added
luxury items such as kitchens, beds, televisions. As the prices went up, the sales actually went down. At that time
too the gas prices were going through the roof. Luxury conversion vans usually had the big V 8 engines and poor
aerodynamics always resulted in poor gas mileage. What became popular were the mini vans and SUVs. Even though
large luxury vans were losing sales, sales did start to rise in the middle nineteen nineties.
There are different types of luxury conversion vans. Such as the camper van, used to go camping with the family.
They had a toilet, microwave, sink; a small fridge; a side sofa, one that fits against the side of the van. Some
even have a pop up top, where one can stand up, if you are not too tall. There are luxury conversion vans that are
used for the disabled. The raised roof allows good head clearance, or maybe a dropped floor that also allows
adequate head room. A person that sits in a wheelchair sits higher than other people; they need that extra head
room to get around in the van better.
Luxury conversion vans for the handicapped also can come with either side or rear lift doors, allowing the
wheelchair to be raised or lowered into the van. To save a bit of money, a lowered floor can be done just in the
cargo area. This is a bit less expensive whereas a full lowered floor.
Most luxury conversion vans come bare, windowless and are full sized one half ton or three quarter ton cargo
vans. Chevrolet, Doge and Ford have luxury conversion vans. Some luxury conversion vans can have graphite leather
seating, often with black inserts. Plush carpet and high gloss wood accents. Front and rear air conditioning with
‘dual zone.’ Other luxury conversion vans will be equipped with dual six way power, power lumbar, power recline and
self leveling armrests. Luxury conversion vans can be so much fun, just driving down the street or a nice road
trip; you will be driving pure luxury.
